Iran Pistachio Export Logistics: 7-Step Guide with Saffron
Iran pistachio export logistics explained: moisture and aflatoxin risks, routes, packing, saffron and dried fruit shipping, and documents.
Iran pistachio export logistics comes down to keeping the cargo dry, clean, well packed and fully documented. Pistachios react badly to moisture and heat. Saffron is small in volume but very high in value. Dried fruit attracts mould and insects. Each product needs its own packing, route and paperwork.
This guide is for importers, agents and Iranian exporters who ship pistachios, saffron and dried fruit by sea, road or air. It covers route choice, packing, container preparation and documents. Royan Logistic is a Tehran-based company that arranges sea, road, rail and air freight, refrigerated transport and customs coordination.
Iran pistachio export logistics: why this cargo is different
Pistachios are a food product with three main risks: moisture, heat and aflatoxin. The German insurers' transport guide (TIS-GDV) says pistachios must be protected from all forms of moisture, including rain, seawater and condensation. Wet packaging should be rejected.
Temperature matters too. The same source gives a favourable carriage range of 5–25 °C. Prolonged temperatures above 30 °C increase respiration in the cargo. Kernels also absorb moisture from the air, so airtight packaging is preferred.
Aflatoxin is produced by mould and may already be present at harvest. Affected nuts are hard to tell apart by eye. Testing therefore belongs at origin, before loading. Iran pistachio export logistics should always start with a lab result, not with a truck booking.
Choosing the route and transport mode
The mode follows the product, the buyer and the time frame.
| Product | Typical mode | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Pistachios (in shell or kernel) | Sea container, or road by truck | Moisture, heat, aflatoxin |
| Saffron | Air freight or courier | Adulteration, theft, small-lot handling |
| Dried fruit | Sea container, or road | Mould, insects, odours |
For sea shipments, cargo usually leaves from Persian Gulf ports. Our guide to international freight from Iran compares the modes. For neighbouring markets, trucks run overland. See the road freight and sea freight pages for details.
Check the season. Hot summer ports and long yard waits raise temperature risk. Ask your forwarder how the container will be stowed and how long it may wait.
Packing, loading and container preparation
Good packing protects quality and also supports a claim if something goes wrong.
- Use clean, dry, food-grade bags or cartons, preferably airtight liners for kernels.
- Inspect the container for odours, holes, rust and moisture before loading.
- Use desiccants or liners where the buyer and carrier agree.
- Stack on pallets, secure the load, and keep bags off the container wall.
- Photograph the loading and record the seal number.
A ventilated container can be used if moisture limits are met and the cargo is shielded from sun, according to TIS-GDV. Ask the carrier what suits your product. For container sizes, read shipping container types and sizes.
Saffron and dried fruit: special cases
Saffron export: small lots, high value
Iran is widely reported as the world's largest saffron producer. The ISO 3632 standard sets requirements for saffron in powder, filament and cut-filament form. Tests measure colour strength, flavour, aroma, foreign matter and moisture.
ISO notes that saffron's high value makes it a frequent target of adulteration. Buyers therefore ask for lab reports and sealed, labelled packs. Ship in tamper-evident packaging and keep batch numbers in your documents.
Lots are small, so air freight or courier is common. Value declarations and insurance need extra care. Confirm the current export rules for saffron with the Trade Promotion Organization of Iran (TPO) and customs.
Dried fruit: dates, raisins, apricots and figs
Dried fruit is vulnerable to mould, insects and strong odours from other cargo. Keep it away from chemicals and fuel. Check moisture content before packing.
Insects are a known issue for nuts and dried fruit. TIS-GDV notes that quarantine or fumigation documents may be required. Ask the buyer which treatment, if any, the destination accepts. Do not fumigate without agreement, because residues can create their own problems.
If you ship fresh produce too, our guide to refrigerated transport from Iran covers the cold chain.
A 7-step plan for Iran pistachio export logistics
Use this order to keep Iran pistachio export logistics under control:
- Test and grade the lot, and keep the lab report.
- Agree delivery terms with the buyer. Our Incoterms 2020 explained guide helps.
- Choose packing and liners to suit the route and season.
- Book transport and arrange cargo insurance.
- Prepare the documents and check them against the buyer's letter of credit or contract.
- Load, seal and photograph the container.
- Track the shipment and report any damage at once.
Small gaps cause most delays: a missing certificate, a wrong HS code, a damp pallet. A short check on each step usually costs less than one demurrage day.
Documents and compliance
Typical documents for Iran pistachio export logistics and similar foods include:
- Commercial invoice and packing list.
- Certificate of origin and phytosanitary certificate. See certificate of origin and phytosanitary certificate.
- Laboratory analysis, such as aflatoxin results, if the buyer requires it.
- Customs declaration and transport document.
HS headings help with duties. Pistachios fall under 0802.51 (in shell) and 0802.52 (shelled). Saffron is usually 0910.20. Confirm codes with your customs broker.
The EU has listed Iranian pistachios for aflatoxin under its increased official controls (Implementing Regulation 2019/1793). The list and check rates are updated from time to time. Confirm current rules with the destination authority and with Iran Customs (IRICA). Also confirm current trade, banking and insurance restrictions with your bank or legal adviser.
Frequently asked questions
Is sea or road better for Iran pistachio export logistics?
For Iran pistachio export logistics, sea suits large volumes to distant markets. Road suits neighbouring markets and faster timelines. Compare transit, handling and cost for your destination.
Do pistachios need a refrigerated container?
Not always. A dry container works if cargo is dry and heat is controlled. For long or hot routes, ask about temperature options.
How is saffron usually shipped?
In small, sealed lots, often by air or courier. Lab reports and clear labels help at customs and with buyers.
What documents does a phytosanitary check need?
Usually the invoice, packing list and an application to the plant protection authority. Requirements vary by destination, so confirm them early.
