Shipping from Iran to Oman, Qatar and Kuwait: 2026 Guide
Shipping from Iran to Oman, Qatar and Kuwait is by sea or air. See ports, GCC customs, documents and what affects transit time.
Shipping from Iran to Oman is a sea-freight job. Iran has no land border with Oman, Qatar or Kuwait, so cargo crosses the Persian Gulf or the Gulf of Oman by ship. Containers usually sail from Bandar Abbas or Bushehr to ports such as Sohar, Hamad Port or Shuwaikh. Air freight covers urgent cargo.
This guide covers the three markets together because the logic is similar. You choose a port pair, a container type and a delivery term, and you prepare documents for a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) customs system. Direct lines change over time, so confirm current services with your forwarder before you book.
Shipping from Iran to Oman: ports and services
Oman has several commercial ports. Sohar, in the north, is one of Oman's largest ports by cargo volume and handles containers and bulk cargo. Salalah, in the south, is a deep-water container port on the east–west shipping lanes. Duqm is a newer deep-water port in central Oman that handles multipurpose and container cargo.
Direct Iran–Oman container lines have been launched more than once. In 2015, a vessel opened a service to Sohar, with sailings planned roughly every 15 days. In 2020, another direct line started operating. Do not plan around old announcements. Ask which services run when you request a quote.
| Destination | Main ports to consider | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Oman | Sohar, Salalah, Duqm | Sohar has had direct lines from Iran |
| Qatar | Hamad Port | Container operations moved there in December 2016 |
| Kuwait | Shuwaikh, Shuaiba | Mubarak Al Kabeer is under development |
Our guide to container shipping from Iran explains FCL, LCL and container sizes, and the container types and sizes article shows which box fits your cargo.
Choosing the Iranian port for shipping from Iran to Oman
Bandar Abbas handles most of Iran's seagoing trade and has the widest choice of services. Bushehr serves the northern Persian Gulf. A direct line to Kuwait was launched from there in 2020, and a Qatar route was announced in 2017. For shipping from Iran to Oman, Bandar Abbas is often the natural starting point because it faces the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.
FCL suits a full container of one shipper's goods. LCL suits smaller lots. Read FCL vs LCL shipping to compare them. Fresh produce needs reefer containers. Building materials and machinery may move in open-top or flat-rack units.
- Ask which Iranian port has the most suitable service.
- Compare door-to-port inland costs for each option.
- Confirm document cut-off dates before the vessel closes.
Qatar and Kuwait: what to know
Shipping to Qatar
Qatar's main container port is Hamad Port, which took over container operations in December 2016. In 2017 Iran announced a planned refrigerated-container route from Bushehr to Qatar, operated by Valfajr Shipping. Whether a direct service exists today should be confirmed when you request a quote.
Shipping to Kuwait
In June 2020 a Bushehr–Kuwait line was launched with a vessel carrying about 150 containers, 25 of them refrigerated. It was aimed at fruit, vegetables and minerals. Kuwait's main ports include Shuwaikh and Shuaiba. A third port, Mubarak Al Kabeer on Bubiyan Island, has been under construction.
Royan Logistic is a Tehran-based logistics company. It arranges road, sea, rail and air freight, groupage and full-truckload shipments, refrigerated and project cargo, customs coordination and ADR transport. Our sea freight service page shows how we handle container bookings.
GCC customs and documents
Oman, Qatar and Kuwait are all GCC members, so shipping from Iran to Oman follows similar customs logic to the other two. Most imports from outside the GCC face a common external tariff of 5% on the CIF value, with a few higher-rate and exempt categories. Goods cleared at one GCC port can generally move onward without paying the tariff again, but each state still runs its own customs checks. Rates and rules change, so ask your buyer's broker to confirm them.
- Commercial invoice and packing list with matching figures.
- Bill of lading. Our guide to bill of lading types explains the options.
- Certificate of origin when the buyer or the rules require it. See certificates of origin and phytosanitary certificates.
- Health, quality or phytosanitary certificates for food and plant products.
- Product labelling that follows destination rules.
On the Iranian side, export declarations go through the customs system of IRICA at irica.ir. The Trade Promotion Organization of Iran publishes trade information. Confirm current rules with customs or the relevant authority before each shipment.
Payment, insurance and banking restrictions can affect trade. Check current trade, banking and insurance restrictions with your bank and legal adviser.
Air freight and multimodal options
For urgent shipping from Iran to Oman and its neighbours, air freight suits high-value or perishable cargo bound for Muscat, Doha or Kuwait City. It costs more per kilogram, so compare it with a fast sea service. Read our article on air freight from Iran for the trade-offs.
Some cargo combines modes, for example a truck to the port and a sea leg to the Gulf. Our intermodal transport page explains when a combined route helps. For a wider view of options, see international freight from Iran.
What affects transit time and cost
We do not quote fixed times or prices in a general guide. These factors matter most for shipping from Iran to Oman and its Gulf neighbours.
- Port pair and whether the sailing is direct or transshipped.
- Container type, weight and any temperature control.
- Vessel cut-off dates and document readiness.
- Customs checks at the destination port.
- Free time, demurrage and detention terms. See demurrage and detention explained.
- Insurance and the delivery term you agree.
Agree the delivery term with your buyer early. Our guide to Incoterms 2020 shows who pays what and where the risk passes.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a land route for shipping from Iran to Oman?
No direct road link exists, because the two countries do not share a border. Cargo goes by sea, usually in containers, or by air. Trucks serve only the Iranian side of the journey.
Which Omani port is best for Iranian cargo?
Sohar has had direct lines from Iran. Salalah and Duqm suit other flows. Compare ports by service, cost and where the buyer is located.
Can fresh fruit be shipped from Iran to the Gulf?
Yes, in refrigerated containers with the correct certificates. Bushehr–Kuwait and Bushehr–Qatar routes were launched or planned for this purpose. Check the destination's food rules first.
Is one forwarder enough for Oman, Qatar and Kuwait?
Often yes. The logic is similar, but each country has its own customs checks. A single forwarder can coordinate bookings and documents for all three.
