FCL vs LCL Shipping: 5 Differences and How to Choose

FCL vs LCL: how cost, transit time, risk and paperwork differ, and when a full container or a shared one suits your cargo better.

FCL vs LCL comes down to who shares the container. With FCL, one shipper uses a whole container. With LCL, your cargo travels in a shared container with other shippers' goods. Choose FCL for large or time-sensitive loads. Choose LCL when your cargo is small and would not fill a box.

This guide compares FCL vs LCL on cost, transit time, risk and paperwork. It helps buyers and exporters decide before the sales contract is signed. FCL means Full Container Load. LCL means Less than Container Load.

What FCL and LCL mean

In FCL, the shipper books the whole container. Cargo is packed at the shipper's own premises, the door is sealed, and the box stays closed until the destination. The price is per container, even if it is not completely full.

In LCL, cargo goes to a consolidation warehouse called a container freight station, or CFS. The consolidator weighs and measures cargo from several shippers and packs it into one container. At destination, the box is unpacked at a CFS and each consignee clears its own goods. Each shipper usually receives a house bill of lading.

FCL vs LCL cost: how pricing works

FCL is quoted per container. LCL is priced by weight or volume, whichever is greater. A common rule treats one cubic metre as equal to 1,000 kg. Many carriers apply a minimum charge of one cubic metre per shipment.

Do not compare freight alone in an FCL vs LCL decision. LCL adds CFS fees at origin and destination, terminal handling charges and a house bill of lading fee. Compare full quotes with every line item. Who pays each charge depends on your delivery term. Our Incoterms 2020 guide explains the main terms.

The break-even point is not fixed. As volume grows, FCL usually becomes cheaper, and many traders treat roughly 10 to 15 cubic metres as a decision zone. That is only a rule of thumb. Ask for both quotes and compare them.

Transit time and risk in FCL vs LCL

LCL takes longer. Cargo must reach the CFS by a cut-off date, wait for the box to fill and be separated again at destination. The delay depends on the route and sailing frequency.

LCL also carries more risk:

  • Cargo is handled several times, so packaging must be strong.
  • Wooden pallets must meet ISPM 15 rules or they can be rejected.
  • If one shipper's goods are held, the whole container may wait.
  • Carrier liability is limited. Valuable cargo needs separate marine insurance.

How FCL and LCL shipments move step by step

An FCL shipment follows a short chain.

  1. You book a container and a sailing with a line or forwarder.
  2. An empty container is collected from a depot and brought to your site.
  3. Your team loads the cargo, and the container is sealed.
  4. The box goes to the port, is cleared for export and is loaded on the vessel.
  5. At destination, the consignee clears the box and collects it.

An LCL shipment adds consolidation and deconsolidation.

  1. You book space with a consolidator and learn the cut-off date.
  2. You deliver the cargo to the origin CFS, or the consolidator collects it.
  3. The CFS checks, weighs and measures the cargo, then packs it with other shipments.
  4. The sealed box sails to the destination port.
  5. The destination CFS unpacks the box and sorts the shipments.
  6. Each consignee clears its goods and collects them.

Because the LCL chain is longer, a delay at any step can hold back every shipper in the box.

When to choose FCL and when to choose LCL

Choose FCL when your cargo is large, timing matters or goods are fragile and valuable. Choose LCL when the shipment is small, shipments are rare or you do not want to pay for empty space.

Dangerous goods, refrigerated cargo and oversize loads usually do not suit standard LCL. Ask your forwarder before booking. If you are new to box sizes, read our guide to shipping container types and sizes.

Packing and paperwork for FCL and LCL

Good packing matters in both modes, but LCL is less forgiving. Pack for repeated handling and mark every carton clearly. Keep the packing list identical to the cargo. A mismatch between documents and goods can trigger an inspection or a hold.

In FCL you usually deal with one consignee and one set of documents for the whole container. In LCL, each consignee clears its own goods. Each therefore needs its own invoice, packing list and house bill of lading. You can read more about bill types in bill of lading types explained.

Time at destination also costs money. When free time at a CFS ends, storage charges usually accrue by the day. For a full container, port and equipment charges can start once free time ends; see demurrage and detention explained for how they work.

Practical notes for cargo from and to Iran

Most containerised cargo in Iran passes through Shahid Rajaee port near Bandar Abbas. Chabahar, on the Gulf of Oman, also has a container terminal. The number of LCL sailings from each port to each destination varies. Ask your forwarder for the schedule and the cargo cut-off date.

Royan Logistic is a Tehran-based international freight and logistics company that coordinates sea freight and groupage. See our sea freight page for the service. Our article on container shipping from Iran adds port detail. Clarify the delivery term and cost split with your buyer under International Chamber of Commerce rules before you sign. Rules and tariffs change, so confirm current conditions with customs and the shipping line.

Frequently asked questions

What is the simplest explanation of FCL vs LCL?

With FCL, one shipper owns the whole container. With LCL, several shippers share one container and each pays for its own weight or volume.

Is LCL always cheaper than FCL?

No. LCL is usually cheaper for small volumes. As volume grows and CFS fees are added, FCL can become cheaper. Get both quotes.

How much longer does LCL take?

There is no fixed number. Consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at destination add days, and the amount depends on the route and sailing schedule.

Does LCL cargo get a bill of lading?

Yes. The consolidator normally issues a house bill of lading. Agree the bill type with your forwarder and your bank.
