Steel Freight from Iran: Complete Guide in 6 Steps
Steel freight from Iran explained: choosing containers, flat racks or trucks for coils, bars, pipes and billets, plus securing, rust control and papers.
Steel freight from Iran starts with the shape of the product. Coils usually travel in containers on bedding beams. Long products go on flat racks or open trucks. Billets and slabs move on bulk or breakbulk vessels. The main risks are concentrated weight, shifting loads and rust.
The right equipment cuts damage and delays. This guide covers coils, plates, long products and semi-finished steel, and explains the securing principles that matter most for buyers and traders.
1. Match the equipment to the product
The same steel needs very different equipment depending on its shape. The table below gives a general frame. The final choice depends on weight, dimensions and the unloading capacity at destination. Tell your forwarder the product list and each piece's weight early, because equipment and price follow from them.
| Product | Typical equipment | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Coils | Container, bedding beams | Floor load, blocking |
| Plates, sheets | Flat rack, open truck | Edge damage, moisture |
| Rebar, profiles, pipes | Flat rack, open top, truck | Bundling, bracing |
| Billets, slabs | Bulk or breakbulk vessel | Port and loading capacity |
In Iranian steel exports, semi-finished products (billets, slabs), long products and flat products are separate categories. Market reports mention FOB billet sales loaded at Bandar Abbas and Bandar Imam Khomeini. Finished products more often move by container or open truck.
2. Steel coils in containers
A coil rests on a small footprint and loads the floor heavily. For that reason it never sits directly on the container floor. Timber or steel bedding beams spread the weight along the length. With proper bedding, one carrier guide gives the floor limit as about 4,800 kg per running metre for a 20 ft container and about 3,000 kg for a 40 ft. Always check the limit set by the container owner.
- A coil can be packed eye to sky, eye to rear or eye to side. Each needs different securing.
- Blocking and bracing are needed in every case. Lashing alone is not enough.
- Do not block against the doors. Use the recess of the front corner post.
- Choose dried timber, and ISPM 15 compliant where required.
- For heavy coils, use steel strapping and two lashing points.
Eye to sky lets the coil sit on a pallet, which makes securing easier. Eye to rear places the coil on lengthwise beams and carries a higher risk of sideways movement at sea. Eye to side puts the coil on a cradle and has the greatest lengthwise risk on the road.
Light coils can go in by forklift. Heavier coils must be pushed into position, which needs special materials and experience. Check the container's CSC plate and cleanliness before loading.
3. Long products and pipes: flat rack and open top
Rebar, profiles and pipes are long and heavy. A flat rack suits these loads if corrosion is not a concern. Where it is, a closed solution is better. An open-top container protects better from weather, but offers fewer securing options. Loading a standard closed box is hard and needs special suspension devices.
The loading rules are simple. Leave no gaps. Stow bundles tight against the side. Fill gaps with cross bracing. Nails or small wedges alone are not secure. Steel wire around a bundle is not enough either; brace the full height. Greased pipes can shoot out unexpectedly. If the load is very long, one flat rack may not be enough, so pieces can be spread over two or more racks. Out-of-gauge loads leave neighbouring slots empty, which can add a surcharge. For wider planning, read our project cargo page.
4. Rust and moisture in steel freight from Iran
The most insidious damage in steel freight from Iran is rust caused by moisture. Temperature swings create condensation inside the container. Wet pallets and timber make it worse. Keep the container, the coils and the dunnage dry.
- Wrap cold-rolled or treated surfaces in kraft paper, plastic sheet or thin steel sheet.
- Use desiccants and rust-preventive (VCI) packing where needed.
- Document that the cargo has no visible rust at loading. A carrier may reject cargo or note the bill if rust is visible at the start.
- Open the container doors and let it air before entering.
Photos of the cargo and the loading are useful in any later claim. Compare equipment in container types and sizes and in our container shipping from Iran guide.
5. Steel freight from Iran by road
By road, flatbed or curtain-sided trucks are common for long and plate products. Heavy single pieces may need a lowbed trailer. Axle and total weight limits differ by country. Confirm the current rules with the authority of every country on your route.
Securing uses chains, steel strapping and high-strength straps. The load should be supported with anti-slip material so it cannot slide when the vehicle moves. Check that the vehicle floor is sound and that weight is spread across the axles. A driver may be asked to certify in writing that the load is properly secured. See truck and trailer types and the road freight page for options.
6. Papers, delivery terms and cost
For customs, steel falls under Chapter 72 of the Harmonized System (iron and steel) or Chapter 73 (articles of iron or steel). The correct HS code drives duty and document needs.
- Commercial invoice and packing list.
- Mill test certificate. Types such as EN 10204 3.1 are requested by the buyer.
- Certificate of origin, if the importing country asks for it.
- Transport document: bill of lading or CMR.
- Loading plan and securing diagram.
Importing countries may apply safeguard measures, quotas or extra checks to steel. Confirm the rules with the relevant customs authority. Delivery terms, or Incoterms, decide who carries transport risk and cost. See Incoterms 2020 explained and the ICC site.
The price of steel freight from Iran depends on weight, product shape, equipment, securing and packing needs, port or border waiting time and destination. Confirm current trade, banking and insurance restrictions with your bank and legal adviser.
Frequently asked questions
Can every container carry steel coils?
No. If weight or floor limits are exceeded, a general-purpose container is unsuitable. A flat rack or specially equipped unit is needed.
Flat rack or open top?
A flat rack is flexible for long, heavy products. An open top protects better from weather. Cargo sensitivity and loading method decide.
Does steel rust in transit?
It can if moisture and condensation are not controlled. A dry container, wrapping, desiccants and correct loading reduce the risk.
Which papers does steel freight from Iran need?
An invoice, packing list, mill certificate, transport document and, if required, a certificate of origin form the basic set. Details vary by country.
