Caspian Sea Shipping: 2026 Guide to Ports and Routes

Caspian Sea shipping links Iranian ports with Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. Learn the ports, routes, seasons and documents.

Caspian Sea shipping connects Iran's northern ports with Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. It suits grain, bulk, heavy cargo and, on some services, containers. The Caspian has no open-ocean access, so cargo from the Persian Gulf or other seas always needs an inland leg to reach it.

This guide explains the main ports, the routes that matter, the seasonal limits and the documents you need. Schedules, port rules and vessel availability change often, so confirm current conditions with your forwarder before you book.

Routes for Caspian Sea shipping from Iran

Four patterns dominate Caspian Sea shipping. The first links Iranian ports with Astrakhan, Olya and Makhachkala. This is the sea leg of the North–South corridor, and cargo then moves by rail or road towards the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean. Read our guide to transit freight through Iran for the wider picture.

The second links Aktau with Iranian ports. Kazakh grain, for example, goes by rail to the Ak Bidai terminal in Aktau and is then loaded onto vessels. The third links Turkmenbashi with Anzali, which Uzbek and Turkmen cargo can use. The fourth is the Trans-Caspian route towards Baku. For the Russian market in particular, see freight from Iran to Russia.

How to choose a port and route

Start from the cargo and the destination. Bulk grain from Kazakhstan fits Aktau and a vessel with a suitable draft. Packaged goods for the Volga region often suit Anzali or Amirabad with Astrakhan or Olya on the other side. Cargo for southern Russia may use Makhachkala. Heavy items need a port with the right cranes and a quay that can take the weight.

Next, compare the land legs. A port with good rail or road access can save days at the end of the journey. Also compare the cost of waiting. A cheaper vessel that sails late can cost more than a faster option. Ask for two or three alternatives and compare the total door-to-door cost, not only the sea rate. Good Caspian Sea shipping planning always looks at the whole chain.

Vessels, seasons and port limits

Vessels and cargo types

Several vessel types serve the Caspian. General cargo ships carry packaged goods and project items. Bulk carriers handle grain and minerals. RoRo ships and ferries carry trucks and sometimes rail wagons. Container services exist, but regular lines and suitable vessels are still limited in some ports.

Port capacity and vessel supply are the two weak points on this sea. Ports at both ends can face congestion, and vessel shortages have been reported on some routes. Ask your forwarder to confirm space before you promise a delivery date. For container details, see our guide to container shipping from Iran.

Seasons, water level and weather

Ice affects the northern part of the sea. In winter, navigation at Astrakhan and Olya can be disrupted and may need icebreaker assistance. Makhachkala and Aktau are described as ice-free, although weather can still delay sailings.

Water level matters too. The northern and north-eastern parts are shallow, while the southern basin is deep. The sea level has been falling in recent years, and some sources report drops of up to about 30 cm in a year. Dredging of the Iranian ports of Amirabad, Nowshahr and Anzali has been discussed. Ask about the current draft limits at each port.

What affects time and cost of Caspian Sea shipping

Quotes depend on many items. These are the main ones:

  • Load and discharge ports, and the inland legs before and after.
  • Cargo type, volume and packing: bulk, general, container or project.
  • Vessel type, draft limits and available space.
  • Port handling, storage and waiting time.
  • Season, ice and weather.
  • Customs procedures in both countries.
  • Rail or truck availability at the port.

Documents for Caspian Sea shipping

Prepare a commercial invoice, a packing list and a cargo manifest. The carrier issues a bill of lading, which our article on bill of lading types explains. Add a certificate of origin when requested. Plant and food cargo often needs a phytosanitary certificate.

Customs in Iran follows the rules of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration, known as IRICA. Confirm current requirements for your goods. Check current trade, banking and insurance restrictions with your bank or legal adviser before you sign.

Combining the sea leg with road and rail

Most Caspian cargo needs a land leg on at least one end. A good plan checks rail access to the port, truck availability and storage space. Rail access differs by port, so confirm what exists today.

Royan Logistic is based in Tehran and arranges road, rail and sea freight, groupage and full-truckload shipments, and customs coordination. See our sea freight and Russia freight pages for details.

Frequently asked questions

Is Caspian Sea shipping available all year?

Mostly yes, but ice affects the north in winter and weather can delay sailings. Ask for the current sailing plan.

Which Iranian port is best?

It depends on cargo, vessel size and the inland leg. Anzali, Amirabad and Nowshahr differ in draft and facilities.

Can the Caspian connect directly to the Persian Gulf?

No. The Caspian is an inland sea, so cargo changes mode between the Gulf and the Caspian ports.

Can containers use this route?

Yes on some services, but capacity is limited. Ask your forwarder to confirm space and equipment.
