Shipping from Iran to China: Sea, Rail and Transit Times
Shipping from Iran to China explained for Iranian exporters and Chinese importers: sea container from Bandar Abbas versus rail via Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, approximate transit times, cost items, documents and a step-by-step plan.
Shipping from Iran to China is the movement of export cargo by sea container from Bandar Abbas (Shahid Rajaee port) or by rail through Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, and it usually takes roughly 2 to 5 weeks depending on the mode. Sea is the lowest-cost and most common choice; rail can be faster but has tighter capacity and a more limited timetable. The right option depends on the type of goods, the delivery date and the budget, whether you are an Iranian exporter or a Chinese importer sourcing from Iran.
This article compares the transport modes, approximate transit times, cost items and documents for trade in this direction. You will see how polymers and petrochemicals, pistachios, saffron, dried fruit, natural stone and carpets from Iran reach Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao or Shenzhen, and when a container ship or a container train is the better tool.
Options for shipping from Iran to China
Three main modes are used. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of each helps you ask the right questions at quote stage.
Sea: the standard choice for volume cargo
Most cargo from Iran to China moves by container. Loads are usually shipped from Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas, Iran's largest container port, then sail through the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman, the Indian Ocean and the Strait of Malacca to Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao or Shenzhen. Depending on the service, the box goes on a direct sailing or via a Gulf transhipment hub such as Jebel Ali, so transit is roughly 20-35 days. If your cargo fills a container on its own you ship FCL; smaller lots go LCL. Our guide to container shipping from Iran covers sizes and the FCL/LCL decision.
Rail: via Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan
Rail freight to China leaves Iran at the Incheh Borun or Sarakhs border crossings into Turkmenistan, continues through Kazakhstan and enters China at Altynkol–Khorgos or Dostyk–Alashankou. Container trains can be expected to take roughly 2-3 weeks, noticeably shorter than sea. The timetable, wagon and container availability and two changes of track gauge (1,435 mm to 1,520 mm at the Iranian border and back to 1,435 mm at the Chinese border) can all affect the actual time. How the line works is explained in our article on the China–Iran rail corridor.
Road and air: the exceptions
Direct road transport to China is rarely chosen because of the distance and the number of transit countries; it appears mostly as road to Central Asia followed by rail. Air freight comes in for samples, high-value small lots such as saffron and urgent shipments, at a cost per tonne far above the other modes.
Mode comparison: time, cost and suitable cargo
The table lets you see the three modes side by side when planning shipping from Iran to China. Times are approximate and terminal to terminal, not door to door; customs and inland haulage at both ends are added separately.
| Mode | Transit time | Cost level | Suitable cargo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sea (FCL/LCL) | Approx. 20-35 days | Low | Bulky, heavy, non-urgent cargo: polymers, natural stone, minerals, dry food |
| Rail (Turkmenistan–Kazakhstan) | Approx. 2-3 weeks | Medium | Containerisable, mid-value cargo where the delivery date matters |
| Road (combined) | Variable | Medium-high | Groupage and special cargo via Central Asia |
Freight in all three modes depends on season, supply and demand and currency. Remember that ocean freight comes with add-ons such as THC, BAF and document fees, so ask for every item to be listed separately on the quote. Payment and documentation requirements are reviewed per shipment.
What affects the transit time
The number of days written on a quote for shipping from Iran to China and the real delivery time can differ. The main factors are:
- Port and service choice: the difference between a direct sailing from Bandar Abbas and a transhipment service can move the arrival date by more than a week.
- Number of transhipments: each transhipment on an indirect service adds a few days.
- Seasonal peaks: Chinese holiday periods and year-end peaks affect both space and rates.
- Customs readiness: a missing document leaves the cargo waiting at the port and generates demurrage.
- Rail border points: the gauge changes at the Iran–Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan–China borders can extend the journey.
Rail's fixed timetable is an advantage that reduces these uncertainties. Its other benefits, low cost per tonne and a low carbon footprint over long distances, are described in our article on rail freight from Iran.
Documents for exports from Iran to China
Every shipment by container or train needs the core trade documents. A complete set is essential both to close the export declaration in Iran and to clear import in China. The main documents are:
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- Certificate of origin
- Export declaration, filed in Iran through a licensed customs broker (your Iranian supplier or forwarder normally arranges this)
- Bill of lading (B/L) for sea, CIM/SMGS consignment note for rail
- Phytosanitary, veterinary or analysis certificates depending on the product
- IMDG/ADR compliance documents for dangerous goods
On the Chinese side there may be producer registration for food and agricultural goods, labelling and importer licence requirements; these should be confirmed against current regulations and destination-country rules. Agreeing early which party handles which document avoids the most common delays.
How a shipment from Iran to China is planned
A China-bound operation from Iran usually follows these steps, with the cargo itself deciding each choice.
- Cargo analysis: weight, volume, pallet count, temperature needs and hazard class are defined.
- Mode and route: rail if the delivery date is tight, sea if cost comes first.
- Container type and FCL/LCL: 20', 40' or 40' HC; reefer for sensitive food, open top or flat rack for out-of-gauge cargo.
- Port or terminal: Bandar Abbas, Chabahar as an alternative, or a suitable inland rail terminal, with inland haulage cost from the factory included.
- Documents and customs: export declaration, certificates and insurance arranged according to the Incoterms 2020 delivery term.
- Tracking and delivery: container or train tracking, import clearance by the Chinese consignee and final delivery.
Heavy cargo such as stone blocks and bagged polymers usually goes in 20' containers because of weight limits, while carpets and light, bulky packed goods go in 40' HC. Humidity control for pistachios and dried fruit, and pre-cooling and temperature logging for food in reefers, should be written into both the sea and the rail contract. LCL consolidation lowers the cost per container for partial loads but can add a few days at the consolidation warehouse.
In the opposite direction, importing goods from China involves different documents and duties; see our article on shipping from China to Iran. For the general picture across all modes, the guide to international freight from Iran is a good starting point.
Regulations and border procedures change over time; confirm the current requirements with Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) and with your forwarder before you book.
Frequently asked questions
How long does shipping from Iran to China take?
By sea, terminal to terminal, roughly 20-35 days depending on direct or transhipment service; by rail via Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan roughly 2-3 weeks. Door-to-door time adds inland haulage, customs and handling at the destination port.
How much does it cost to send a container to China?
No exact figure can be given; rates depend on season, supply and demand, container type and currency. Ask for THC, document fees and inland haulage to be shown separately from the ocean freight on the quote.
Which documents does a Chinese importer need from the Iranian side?
The commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and the transport document (bill of lading or CIM/SMGS note) are the basic set. Health, analysis or dangerous-goods certificates are added depending on the product.
Should I choose sea or rail?
If the cargo is bulky and the delivery date is flexible, sea is more economical. If the deadline is critical and the cargo suits a container, rail can shorten the journey for a moderate increase in cost.
